Hi. As you may have heard, the City’s final 2012 budget restored four crime prevention specialist (CPS) positions. This means that Midtown Safety Center will remain open in 2012! We will have five CPSs in Third Precinct: Don Greeley in Sector 1, Karen Notsch in Sector 2. Sue Roethele in Sector 3 and Shun Tillman in Sector 4. I will remain at Midtown Safety Center. Earlier this month, CPS Carla Nielson was reassigned to the Second Precinct (Northeast and Southeast) due to a CPS shortage there.

I have attached a new map that shows CPS and shift lieutenant assignments for 2012.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to working together in 2012.

STEP-UP and Work - Teen Job Program

STEP-UP Summer Jobs applications now accepted!

Last summer 1,980 young people were employed in great summer jobs at 275 top Twin Cities companies, nonprofits and public agencies through the City of Minneapolis STEP-UP Summer Jobs Program. Working in partnership with AchieveMpls, STEP-UP provides the kind of skills training, on-the job experience and professional connections young people need to succeed after high school.

STEP-UP interns work at a wide range of organizations, from law firms and corporate offices to hospitals, media outlets, educational settings and more. They serve as clerical workers, tutors, marketing and tech support assistants, gardeners, animal care interns and many other positions. Last summer STEP-UP interns brought home $2.9 million in wages.

Applications for the 2012 program are now being accepted, with a deadline of February 3.  Applicants must live in Minneapolis, be 14-21 years old on June 1, meet income guidelines and not currently be enrolled in college (they may be enrolled in PSEO). Interns chosen for the program will participate in work-readiness training in March and April and then work from June 18 through mid-August. All jobs are paid a minimum of $7.25 per hour.

STEP-UP applications are available online. Applicants who are accepted will be notified in March, with work-readiness training beginning March 26. For more information call 612.455.1530.

A Look at a Posada in Phillips

Ann Treacy recently wrote for the TC Daily Planet about the Posada held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.  She has some pictures and background, but her piece ended with this paragraph:

The Posada has been celebrated in the area for several years. Originally the production was done in tandem with the Heart of the Beast Theater; this is the second year it has been performed solely by the St. Paul's Lutheran Church community. Reverend Patrick Cabello Hansel has been reaching out to the Latino population around St. Paul's Lutheran Church since 2005. The Posada is one example of the emerging Latino community bringing a new look and new perspective to the Church who has been serving the community since 1872.

Midtown Greenway Survey

Got ten minutes?  Use them to take this survey about the Midtown Greenway and Midtown Greenway Coalition. Your answers will be kept confidential and will help us direct our work to make the Greenway better.  We really appreciate your time and input!

Be a local superhero!

In 2011, over 85 wonderful individuals volutneered their time to ride the Greenway and Hiawatha LRT trail after dark with Trail Watch.  And while the weather outside may be frightful, a core group of these real-life superheroes* will keep riding all winter long. If you're considering becoming a Trail Watcher (or have been in the past and have fallen out of the habit), now is the time to get out there.

Trail Watch is effective: the Midtown Greenway has seen a dramatic drop in crime since Trail Watch got off the ground. Plus, what better way to spend an evening and help out your community than riding your bike on the Greenway with a group of amazing people?

Right now, Trail Watch needs your help. TUESDAY NIGHTS are in need of a ride leader! This person will commit to riding every Tuesday and will help recruit for and organize those rides. It's a fun opportunity to make a really big difference, so email trailwatch@midtowngreenway.org if you want to save the day! Check out the Trail Watch page to view ride times and location.

*Trail Watchers are not required to have superhuman powers and do not engage in confrontation with evildoers. Rather, they act as extra eyes and ears for the police by observing and reporting illegal or suspicious activity and unsafe conditions.

Trail Watch is sponsored by Bikes and Pieces, Bryant-Lake Bowl, Common Roots Cafe, Freewheel Bike, Galactic Pizza, New Belgium Brewing, Pizza Luce Uptown, Peacock Groove, and Wells Fargo. We love you guys!

Save the Date(s)!

On January 21st, the Midtown Greenway Coalition will be hosting a Happy Hour and several Transit Seminars in the Coalition office (2834 10th Avenue S, Greenway Level, Suite 2). The schedule for the day is:

3 p.m. Streetcar Seminar: Learn about the proposed streetcar for the Midtown Corridor, the current Alternatives Analysis, and the past and upcoming work of the Coalition on this issue.

4 p.m. Winter Biking on a Budget: The Minneapolis Bike Walk Ambassadors will be teaching us about winter biking tips and safety...without emptying your wallet. Defnitiely worth checking out if you plan to ride this winter!

5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Open House and Happy Hour: You know the drill.  Drink delicious New Belgium beer and talk about biking, the Greenway, and things going on at the MGC.

On February 11th, the MGC will partner with the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition and Bike Walk Twin Cities to throw the first-ever Winter Wonder Walk/Ride on the Greenway! Beginning at noon outside the MGC office, participants will bike or walk a designated route and stop at different activity stations along the corridor before reconvening at the office for a celebration of non-motorized transit and all things winter. A free-will donation to the MGC is encouraged, but participation is free and you can register for it here.

New Girard Ramp and Bridge

Things are looking good for Girard Avenue! The new bridge and ramp are installed and will likely open in January or early February. There will be additional construction and landscaping work taking place around the ramp in the late spring, but it shouldn't interfere with use. This new access point is great news for Greenway users, especially those trying to get to the east side of Uptown.

The City Fix highlights the work of media/illustration/graphic design student Katy Bereridge. Seriously cool..
