Minnesota’s first Community Supported Pub starts in Minneapolis

Image003

The Smokehouse Brewpub has already begun making exterior improvements to the old Oak building on the corner of 38th Street East and 28th Avenue South.

Ever dreamed of owning your own pub? Your chance may be just around the corner. After stock market fluctuations left Jamie Robinson and his business partners with a financing gap, he approached the City of Minneapolis to find funding for his craft beer and smoked foods concept in the former Oak Plus store on 38th Street. But instead of city subsidies, a grassroots model of community ownership quickly emerged.

Kristin Guild, the city’s manger of business development, informed Robinson that the Seward

Co-op raised $1.5 million for a new building by selling shares to small investors. “Community supported business is something Minneapolis does well,” she says.

Through word-of-mouth among craft beer aficionados and a website, Robinson has already raised $101,000 from 150 people. The full goal of $160,000 could be reached within a month. “The local

food movement wouldn't be complete without locally-made craft beer,” said Council Member Gary Schiff. “The pub would create 25 jobs and bring new vitality to 38th Street, just blocks from the Light Rail station. Jamie and his team are proving that despite the recession, people crave authentic, local experiences more than ever.” Go to http://www.smokehousebrewpub.com/ for investor information.

Jeremy Messersmith plays the cemetery

Image004

Jeremy Messersmith will perform a benefit concert at Pioneers and Soldiers Cemetery Oct. 8th. Proceeds will support efforts to restore the cemetery’s historic fence.

Indie pop-musician Jeremy Messersmith will perform a benefit concert for Pioneers and Soldiers Cemetery, 2925 Cedar Avenue South, on Saturday, October 8th. Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles will also share the stage. Proceeds from the performance will help support the Friends of the Cemetery’s efforts to restore the historic steel and limestone pillar fence that protects the cemetery along Lake Street and Cedar Avenue. The historic cemetery is a fitting venue for Messersmith, as it was the inspiration for this third album. Tickets can be purchased at Electric Fetus, Hymie's Vintage Records, Treehouse Records, and online at www.friendsofthecemetery.org. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the show. Tickets are limited, so advanced purchase is advised. Tickets are not required for children 12 years and under, however donations are accepted.

Pioneers and Soldiers Cemetery in the Ninth Ward is one of several historic places competing for $1 million in preservation grants through a new program from American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Voting is being conducted on Facebook page of Partners in Preservation, a community-based program that will bring a total of $1 million in preservation grants to historic places in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area. Local residents and people around the country are encouraged to vote at www.Facebook.com/PartnersinPreservation. People who “Like” Partners in Preservation on Facebook can vote once per day through October 12th. The historic place that receives the most votes will be guaranteed its full grant request, up to $125,000, with the balance of the $1 million being distributed to the remaining sites based on recommendations from an advisory committee composed of civic and preservation leaders.

This Friday Sept 30th at Breakfast with Gary – Can city government be more efficient?

Image006

With an annual $1.3 billion operating budget and more than 3,000 employees, Minneapolis city government ranks as a major business and employer in the city. But with federal and state aide falling and property taxes soaring, what results should city taxpayers expect for the tax dollars they invest? As the City Council begins its annual budget process, join your neighbors to get answers to these questions and more, with Council Member Gary Schiff and Minneapolis City Coordinator Steven Bosacker. Bosacker has served as the City Coordinator since January 2006 and was chief of Staff for Governor Jesse Ventura.

Breakfast with Gary is a monthly meeting held from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. the final Friday of the month at the Mercado Central, 1515 East Lake Street. $5 buys a delicious breakfast hosted by La Loma.

Attempted Kidnapping in Midtown

Attempted Kidnapping                                      September 27, 2011

Facts:

On Monday, September 26th, about 3:30 pm, a 14-year-old female was walking home from South High School.  She noticed a black 4-door vehicle because of its horn honking.  The young girl continued to walk home and noticed that the vehicle appeared to be following her.

As she was walking on the 10th Avenue bridge over the Midtown Greenway, she was grabbed from behind by the suspect from the vehicle.  The suspect attempted to force the victim into the car.  The victim fought back and was able to get away from the suspect who fled Northbound on 10th Avenue South.

The suspect is described as a black male, 27-33 years old, medium complexion, 6’2”-6’3” with braided hair and a goatee.  He was wearing a long red t-shirt and black jeans.  The vehicle is a black 4-door with the license plate starting with the letter “K”.

What you can do:

Here are some helpful tips that parents can use when talking to their children about personal safety:

·         Call 911 immediately on anyone suspicious.

·         Cellphones and Ipods can be distracting.  Stay alert to your surroundings—be aware of who is ahead of you and behind you.

·         If at all possible, travel in groups or pairs, not alone.

·         Be aware of vehicles idling or strangers loitering nearby.

·         If you think someone is following you, switch directions and walk to a place where there are other people.

·         Be wary of isolated spots when you’re on the street.

IF YOU ARE CONFRONTED BY A POTENTIAL ATTACKER:

·         Call attention to yourself by yelling, scream or making other noises to attract attention to the attacker.

·         Call 911 and report it immediately.

·         Do what you need to do to survive.

·         Inform the responding officers if you see something that may have been handled or left behind by the suspect (cigarette butt, pop can, etc.).

If you have any questions, either contact Crime Prevention Specialist Don Greeley for the Midtown Phillips Neighborhood (612/673-3482 or donald.greeley@minneapolismn.gov) or Crime Prevention Specialist Karen Notsch for the Corcoran Neighborhood (612/673-2856 or karen.notsch@minneapolismn.gov).

First patient gives birth in water at Abbott Northwestern Hospital

Aimee Blomberg and Kaelyn Grace Blomberg rested in a cushiony, inflatable tub of warm water in their room at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.

Blomberg family poses for a portrait.

The Blomberg Family

Kaelyn was born on September 15, 2011 at 3:37 p.m. Aimee lifted the newborn out of the water and into her comforting embrace.

"I can’t imagine what it would have been like without the water," said Aimee. "It was so relaxing and a huge pain management tool."

"I had no idea what it would be like, but the water definitely made labor a lot easier for her," said Sam Blomberg, who did not get into the tub but was with his wife throughout the process.

Abbott Northwestern is the first hospital within Allina Hospitals & Clinics to offer the water birth option. Abbott Northwestern has the highest birth volume in the region, delivering 4,000 babies each year.

"We have a reputation for excellent care, and we continue to support all childbirth experiences," said Debbie Biffle, RN, labor and delivery nurse, who is leading the water birth initiative at Abbott Northwestern.

Abbott Northwestern requires women to meet certain criteria to use the water birth option. They also must sign consent forms that are provided to physicians and midwives who practice at Abbott Northwestern.

The Blombergs, who are in their early twenties, live in Coon Rapids. Kaelyn is their first child. They chose to give birth at Abbott Northwestern specifically because of the birthing tubs.

"When my midwife said the tubs were available at Abbott Northwestern, I knew I wanted to deliver there even though there were other hospitals closer to where I lived," said Aimee.

Help bring preservation funding to Phillips

Below is a post by Susan Hunter Weir about a funding challenge for the Minneapolis Pioneers and Soldiers Cemetery.  I would also like to note that the American Swedish Institute is also in the contest for this money.  Neither are actually in Midtown Phillips, but both are in the greater Phillips Community and are important landmarks.

MPS Names Area B Superintendent

Superintendent fills key leadership position
Stephen Flisk to serve as associate superintendent for Area B

MINNEAPOLIS –Stephen Flisk, an experienced education leader from Chicago Public Schools (CPS), on October 6 will be named the new associate superintendent for Area B, a key leadership position in Superintendent Bernadeia Johnson’s administration. In this new role, Flisk will be responsible for creating and modeling a culture of high expectations and providing ongoing support to building leaders to facilitate school environments that address a variety of needs and allow for the inclusion of all students. He will work with school communities to create the necessary conditions for dramatic and increased student achievement and improved overall school performance.

“Mr. Flisk has a strong track record for increasing student performance,” said Johnson. “His 20 years of experience and education leadership will be instrumental in our work to accelerate our efforts to narrow the achievement gap in Minneapolis.”

Flisk comes to Minneapolis from CPS, where he most recently served as academy superintendent of Carver Military High School. His accomplishments include increasing the five-year graduation rate by 18 percent, increasing student attendance by two percent and improving the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion rate to 91.6 percent. During his time at CPS, Flisk also served as area instruction officer and was responsible for instructional leadership and management of 28 schools where the achievement gap was reduced significantly among elementary-aged Latino and African American students.

Flisk is anticipated to receive his doctorate in urban education leadership from the University of Illinois, Chicago, in December 2012. He holds a Master of Science degree in mathematics from Chicago State University, a Master of Arts degree in education from Saint Xavier University and a certificate of advanced study in administration from National-Louis University.
