Project Overview

Hennepin County, along with the City of MinneapolisMetro Transit andMn/DOT, has initiated work on the latest I-35W Transit/Access project. This project will cover the area between approximately 32nd Street and the I-35W/I-94 Commons area. View the Project Area Map. The project will include:

  • Determining a recommended location and preliminary design of a new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) station in the median of I-35W providing connections for users to/from Lake Street, the Midtown Greenway, Nicollet Avenue and I-35W.
  • Completing preliminary design of I-35W between approximately 32nd Street and I-94. The termini include the Lake Street/28th Street interchange (31st to 28th Street), the areas to the north that may be impacted by redesign of the interchange, and two bridges that need replacement under Chapter 152 legislation.
  • Completing a Visual Quality Manual for the project, which will provide guidance on streetscape features, landscaping, pedestrian facilities, and other features that will both create corridor continuity and neighborhood integration.
  • Completing an Environmental Assessment for the project documenting any potential environmental impacts and appropriate ways to avoid, minimize and/or mitigate those impacts.

The functional and aesthetic project components of this complex project all need to be integrated. The many “moving parts” that define this project must work together seamlessly to satisfy local and regional transportation needs, serve all modes while reinforcing a sense of place for the community of neighborhoods and business districts along the corridor. Developing major transportation solutions in a complex urban environment is an iterative process, with new discoveries occurring throughout. The work plan and associated 3-year timeline is expected to provide sufficient time to identify and address critical issues and decisions. View the Timeline for Project Completion.

This study will be carried out in full consultation with residents and businesses in affected neighborhoods and commercial areas through aProject Advisory Committee (PAC), open houses, and other neighborhood and business association meetings. There will also be a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) to ensure proper agency interaction, analysis, and input. TAC Membership includes Hennepin County, the City of Minneapolis, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT), Metro Transit, Metropolitan Council, Federal Highways Administration, and representatives of the consultant team.
