Tomorrow is Primary Day for SD61

Tuesday September 13 is the Partisan Primary for the special election to fill the State Senate seat vacated by Linda Berglin which covers all of the Phillips Community and a total of 23 precints.

Below is a picture and links to the websites of individuals who participated in Councilman Schiff's special Breakfast with Gary.

From top left (clockwise) are Senate District 61 candidates Elsa Batica, Matt Brillhart, Farheen Hakeem, Representative Jeff Hayden, Kyle Wilson, Paulette Will,  Sadik Warfa, Bruce Lundeen, and Kristian Heuer.

You can use the Secretary of State's Poll finder if you don't know where you are supposed to go cast your ballot.  The City has a great website setup with links to lots of information about tomorrow's primary and the October 18 special elections.

All voters receive the same ballot and privately vote within the political party of their choice. The top candidate in each major political party will be on the general election ballot, along with minor party candidates and independent candidates.

Based on the candidate filings the only actual primary contest appears to be within the DFL:
  • Jeff Hayden DFL
  • Sadik Warfa DFL
  • Kristian Heuer DFL
  • Elsa Batica DFL
  • Paulette Will DFL
  • Kyle Wilson DFL
  • Bruce A. Lundeen Republican
  • Farheen Hakeem Green
  • Matt Brillhart Independence

For what appears to be a highly contested DFL field I've not seen much from the candidates.  I got a call from Hayden over the weekend and Heuer has been posting on e-democracy forums. I've seen a few yard signs for Warfa, but not much else.  Hayden has the DFL and Stonewall DFL endorsements.

The TC Daily Planet offers this background on the DFL candidates:

In Senate District 61, Rep. Jeff Hayden, DFL-Minneapolis, a two-term House member, received the local DFL endorsement against a crowded field that includes Elsa Batica, a former deputy director of the Minneapolis Civil Rights Department and nonprofit facilitator, graphic designer Kristian Heuer, tax auditor Sadik Warfa, web developer Kyle Wilson and longtime DFL Party staffer Paulette Will.

The general election will also include Green Party candidate Farheen Hakeem and Independence Party candidate Matt Brillhart.

Hayden is the establishment favorite to replace Berglin, having received her endorsement as well as those of numerous unions and GLBT organizations, along with that of Rep. Karen Clark, a DFLer who represents the neighboring district.

Hayden takes a more liberal position on health care reform than Berglin, and was chief author of a bill that would institute single-payer health care statewide.

“Health care is a priority for me as it is for Sen. Berglin, and I believe our goals are the same, health care coverage for all Minnesotans,” he said.

Batica said she’s worried about losing a strong, female voice in the Senate and believes she can bring more results than Hayden, despite not receiving the local party endorsement.

“My career as a facilitator and my ability to bring parties together to reach compromise is what I believe sets me apart,” she said. “I value and believe in the politics of inclusion.”

Will said she has a proven track record of advocacy and organizing that will serve the district well, if elected. Representing the district is her primary concern, she said.

“SD 61 will be one of the communities to first feel the impact of the new cuts in the federal budget,” she said. “(It) will be a barometer for what will be happening all across the state and country next year.”

Warfa’s campaign website lists fiscal conservativism, school choice and universal health coverage as top campaign issues.

Wilson’s campaign website lists cycling advocacy, single-payer health care and taxing the richest Minnesotans at the top of his issues list.

Heuer is a first-time candidate who is also a newcomer to political activism. He said he got into the race to “end the partisan bickering” in the Legislature.

Stonewall DFL Endorses Jeff Hayden in SD61 Special Election

From David De Grio <david1369@gmail.com>

Stonewall DFL Endorses Jeff Hayden in SD61 Special Election

On Sunday, 14Aug2011, Stonewall DFL, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and ally caucus of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, unanimously endorsed Representative Jeff Hayden in the Senate District 61 Special Election. “Jeff Hayden does more than just speak to the cause of equality; he has been in the trenches fighting for equality both personally and professionally,” said Stonewall DFL Chair David DeGrio. “As an ally in the Minnesota House, Jeff Hayden has worked tirelessly to defeat discriminatory legislation and to enact laws ensuring basic legal fairness for all citizens of Minnesota.  Outside of the legislative halls, Jeff continues to play an integral role in bringing together a diverse set of community leaders from various marginalized communities to defeat the 2012 Marriage Discrimination Amendment.”

Cathy Harrison, Associate Chair of Stonewall DFL, said “members of the LGBT community, along with our friends and allies, can be assured that a Stonewall DFL endorsed candidate is the best candidate to advocate for our community at all levels of elected leadership.”

Stonewall DFL, with more than 4,000 members state-wide, is a political organization that works for a safe and equitable Minnesota by working to elect LGBT and allied Democrats to office in Minnesota and within the DFL. Stonewall offers advice to candidates and campaigns about LGBT outreach and offers endorsements for local, state and federal DFL candidates.  For this particular election, Stonewall DFL screened and rated five candidates.

Kristian Heuer Announces for State Senate 61 Seat

This letter was recently posted on the Minneapolis Issues Forum followed by an open Q&A thread Kristian started. If elected, Senate District 61 would be represented yet again by a graphic designer! (Kristian's LinkedIn Profile)

Hi there.

My name is Kristian Heuer, and I am running for Linda Berglin's vacated seat in District 61. While I am pretty sure none of the members of this board know who I am, I'd like to introduce myself, and my decision to run for this seat. First, a background: I was born and raised in Burnsville, and have been living in Minneapolis for the past 10 years. First in Whittier, then Cedar-Riverside, followed by Elliot Park and now presently in Bryant. I received my Bachelor's Degree from Augsburg College, I love this city with all my heart and can't think of a better place to live and raise a family. It is because of this, and my feeling that the "politics as usual" that are occurring in St. Paul that have motivated me to run for this seat.

My only problem, I have no political experience; and you know what, i don't care. These past few weeks, I've grown sick of hearing about furloughed state employees and bickering about whether or not our state will have a reasonable budget. If that isn't motivation to run for office, I don't know what is.

My politics, to say the least, are complicated. I neither wholly identify myself as Republican or Democrat. I am just an average citizen and who wants better for his state.

While I am still trying to formulate a strategy for this upcoming election, I can try my best to let you know where I stand on issues that we all find important. As far as the recent government shutdown goes, one thing was evident to me, that i feel is probably evident to all of us. You can't spend money if you don't have it to spend. While I whole heartedly support cutting government spending on areas that need reform, deferring payments to our public schools are not the solution. While my fellow residents in the 61st are regularly having the supensions and tires on our cars fixed and replaced, we should not as a state be redirecting money from the tobacco settlement to ensure our state has a "balanced" budget. We should be paying our public school districts in full and on time, so the valuable educators we employ with our tax dollars are able to do their jobs to the best of their abilities. We should be directing money from a landmark public health settlement towards fostering even greater public health in one of the healthiest states in the nation. When it comes to paying for all of the other obligations of the state, we need to be sensible and honest. It's just like when we were all kids and wanted that 25¢ gumball, but only had a nickel; gumball machines don't take I.O.U.'s. So, we need to find a reasonable means to pay for our past obligations and expenditures; and tax revenue is the best way to go about it. I am for raising taxes on the wealthiest among us, and I am all for simplifying the ways we are all taxed as Minnesotans. As the saying goes, we all have a vested interest if we all have some skin in the game, and now more than ever has that been the case.

I would love to speak with every person here to discuss the issues that you feel are important; because hopefully, I'll be representing you this fall as the Senator from the 61st District.

Thank you,
Kristian Heuer
