An e-mail from a Midtown Resident about some upcoming events:

My fledgling press, Miras Press, is holding a publication reading for one of our authors, Meta Commerse. Meta's collection, Rainsongs: Poems of a Woman's Life is Miras Press' debut poetry collection. The reading is Friday, May 18th, 7PM, Phillips Community Center, multipurpose room. All are welcome but Phillips only has 30 chairs for the room (lots of standing room).

Also, we are offering a writing workshop Saturday, May 19th, 2-4PM featuring Meta's Story Medicine workshop that she has held in Atlanta, Chicago, Asheville and other cities. Also, I will lead a writing exercise. This is a free workshop for Phillips residents, particularly those in our few blocks specifically on your distribution list. Depending upon the number of participants, this workshop will most likely be held in the Phillips Community Center or an outside location (weather permitting). All who would like to attend the free workshop, please email me at 'Lawrence@miraspress.com, Subject: writing workshop' by next Friday, May 11th, so that we can secure appropriate space, refreshments, and other materials.

Click the links below for more information.

The flyer for the reading is attached.

Best,

Lawrence

Blood Drive - April 27

American Red Cross Blood Drive
The American Red Cross will be holding a blood drive at Midtown Global Market on Friday, April 27 from 3pm-8pm.  Your blood is needed more than you think.
  • Every two seconds someone in America needs blood
  • More than 38,000 pints of blood are needed in the US every day
  • Only 38% of the population is eligible to donate and just a fraction of those eligible (about 8%) actually donate blood
  • The need for blood is constant and the blood supply must be regularly replenished.  That is why it is so important that generous donors like you give regularly
To be eligible to donate blood you must:
  • Be at least 17 years old (16 for whole blood with signed Red Cross parental consent form where state permits)
  • Weigh at least 110 lbs
  • Be in good health
For more information, please visit www.givebloodgivelife.org

2. About the seeds and seedlings

Seeds are from Johnny's and plants are from Grow! Twin Cities.  All seeds and plants are non-GMO and organic and heirloom varieties are available.  Contact us if you have any questions about the seeds or seedlings.

You will be able to chose the varieties of seeds or seedlings you would like to plant.  A full list of the varieties available can be found here.

3. What if I can't come on Saturday?

The best thing to do  is to send someone to pick up your seeds and seedlings for you.  You choose what varieties you want, so send your friend with a list!

If you cannot send anyone, you can pick up your seeds after April 16th at the Gardening Matters office at Sabathni Community Center (310 E. 38th St. #204B).  We will not be able to store seedlings, so if you don't pick up on Saturday, you will only get seeds this time.  But don't worry--most of the seedlings are being distributed in May (for a full list, click here)!  Please let us know if you plan to pick up your seeds at our office.

For Northside Hub members only: There will be a second mini-distribution on Sunday, April 15th from 12:30-1:30 at St. Olaf Community Campus (2901 Emerson Ave N).  If you can't come on Saturday, you can pick up your seeds and plants then!

4. Sign up for 2012 membership

Remember that you need to sign up for 2012 Hub membership even if you were a member last year!  You can sign up online or print an application and mail it (or bring it on Saturday) atwww.gardeningmatters.org/hubs.

5. There is a new Hubs Event Calender!

You can find it by going to www.gardeningmatters.org/hubs and clicking on "Calendar" on the left side-bar.  Keep an eye out for classes and other upcoming events!

Mark your calenders for the second seedling distribution on May 19th!
Times and locations will be sent out soon!

Feel free to contact Lina at Gardening Matters with any questions:

Call for performers- Phillips Indigenous Cultures Community Celebration

Teen Programming at Waite House is hosting our first annual Phillips Indigenous Cultures Community Celebration from 6:00-7:30 on Wednesday, April 18 in the Waite House gym. A youth-led event with the intention of uniting and celebrating all Indigenous groups of the Americas.

The goal is to come together to recognize each other’s history and culture through dance, spoken word performances, keynote speakers, live art, great food and great music!
We want to celebrate and honor the numerous indigenous cultures and traditions in Phillips and across the Twin Cities. Whether it be traditional Ecuadorian, Aztec, Ojibwe, Bomba from Puerto Rico, or Lakota dance, we want you there.

If you know a spoken word performer or storyteller, we want them there. If groups or individuals want to hang (or sell) art work or photos, we are all about it! Short videos? We are down. Whoever identifies as indigenous is welcome to apply!

This is our first time organizing this event, so we are open to feedback and ideas. Again, it is a youth-driven project, so our teens at Waite  House will be directing the process on behalf of our organization. This is not a process where adults take-over and direct, but are welcome to contribute and support.

To apply to perform at the Celebration, please contact Julie Graves or Rachel Young at 612-721-1681 or gravesj@puc-mn.org,  youngr@puc-mn.org
