The Bridging Minneapolis Festival started on August 13th at the northeast corner of Cedar Ave and 24th St. Haven Herrin and Ian McNamara gathered water at dawn (from Mississippi River and Lake of the Isles) and met to begin the 2011 Bridging Festival. Sandy Spieler of In the Heart of the Beast Theatre, hosted as the group poured the water together, whispered blessings to each other and sang quietly in unison.
The group paraded or marched West down 24th Street from Cedar stopping next at the East Phillips Park Community and Cultural Center, where participants heard Brad Pass tell the history of the center, toured the building, and participated in a dance class!
The next stop on the festival route was the Phillips Community Center, where participants had lunch and participated in a circle facilitated by Louis Alemayehu. See the video below:
After creating festival regalia (which can be seen below) we got a quick synopsis about the Village Market/Somali Mall (aka the 24 Mall) from Mohamed (see below).
The climax of the event was the unveiling of 6 murals designed and painted by residents of the Phillips West and Whittier neighborhoods. These mural panels were hung on the sound walls on either side of 35W. Residents from Kateri House, St. Stephens Shelter, and Jefferson Middle School worked with artists from MCAD to design and paint the circular murals. You can watch the unveiling and commentary in this video below:
Additional commentary can be found here.
After unveiling the 6 murals the group proceeded to a vacant lot behind Open Eyes Theater for a short performance with neighborhood actors of all ages. The performance highlighted the idea of working together and helping each other out. At this point in the day my Flip Cam was full and my cell phone dead, so no more videos!
The last part of the festival included Live African music (Siama Matuzungidi, Joe Shalita & Bingo), snow cones and kids’ games, storytelling (hosted by The Alley Newspaper), neighborhood history, perennial seed balls, arts activities, and more. It was a festive end to a festive day!
I have one more video of Dallas Johnson talking about the Festival and how it came to be, but I ran out of free upload space! So it will get posted next week. Here is Dallas:
Here are a few pictures that I took during the Minneapolis Bridging Project. I have some videos that need editing and I'll get those up soon.
The opening cirlce group which brought together the water from Lake of the Isles and the Mississppi River.
Brad Pass talking about the story of the East Phillips Park Community and Cultural Center
Shirley Heyer, Joseph Spangler, and Sandy Spieler posing for a picture during lunch at the Phillips Community Center. The catered lunch was excellent and was provided by Amalia Moreno-Damgaard.
After a circle of singing and community building In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater had a make and take art activity which was creating umbrellas and banners or "festival regalia" which would be used later in the day!
This sweet bike joined the festival parade!
After leaving the Phillips Community Center we "toured" the Village Market Somali Mall (aka the 24 mall).
What parade would be complete without a musical leader? Drums and accordians were a perfect complement to our march down 24th Street.
Here is one of the murals that was unveiled as the climax of the event. Six total murals were unveiled, 3 on each side of 35W and two each from Jefferson Middle School students, St. Stephen's, and Kateri House. They looked beautiful (you'll see the rest in the videos).
The next to last event of the festival was a play performed by local children and In the Heart of the Beast.
On Saturday the Institue for Agriculutre and Trade Policy (IATP) celebrated their 25th Anniversary by having a Bike and Bite event. Bike and Bite is a great concept - ride around Minneapolis and visit event sponsors who also have sample tables of their locally sourced menus!! Restaurants like the Birchwood Cafe and Common Roots and stops like the Midtown Farmers Market hosted 150 riders throughout the morning. The riders appeared to be having a good time. I spoke with a few at the beginning of the day, but couldn't attend the after-party to follow-up with them.
Registration
Group using Nice Ride bikes to complete the event (see the below video)
A picture of the map. Most of the spots were in South Minneapolis (a lot were in Uptown), and one stop at a Community Garden in North Minneapolis.
Here are a few riders heading out of IATP's parking lot. Each rider or group of riders was able to determine their own route, trying to hit all the delicious stops along the way!
Meet Chuck, he was a rider looking to have fun with friends and even rode a Nice Ride bike while doing so!
This is the tent at the Midtown Farmers Market. A lot of market goers stopped by to see what was happening.
Here is the bike rack at the Midtown Farmers Market.
Meet JoAnne who works with IATP as the Program Director of Local Foods. She shared a little bit about IATP, Bike and Bite, and the Midtown Farmers Market.
Hi Phillips neighbors!
I wanted to send a rather last-minute (sorry!) invitation to folks in the neighborhood about a compost bin building workshop we're hosting tomorrow evening, June 14th, at Shalom Community Garden. The workshop will be put on
by the Compostadores (http://thecompostadores.wordpress.com/), a group of compost enthusiasts dedicated to building a neighborhood-based compost infrastructure in the Twin Cities*. * We'll be building bins for the Shalom
Garden, but hope that they can be used by some of our neighbors, and the workshop will be an opportunity to learn the Growing Power (http://growingpower.org/) bin-building method, using salvaged materials to build simple, static, "no-turn" 4'x4' compost bins. Feel free to invite friends and/or neighbors, the more the merrier!
The details:
*WHAT: Compostadores Workshop <http://thecompostadores.wordpress.com/>*
*WHEN: *Tuesday, June 14th from 5:30-8ish
*WHERE: *Shalom Community Garden, 2819-2823 15th Ave S, Minneapolis
Hope to see you there!
Take care,
Julia Eagles

These students have been researching this issue in South Minneapolis for the past few months and would like to share their findings with the broader community. The main issue students looked at was - is the food in the hood killing us? The presenters will cover issues of community health, challenges to organic food access, and solutions.
