Light up the Greenway on June 9th

Join the Midtown Greenway Coalition on the evening of June 9th for a dazzling night of fun activities on the Greenway!  From 6 PM until midnight, nearly 20 artists will be presenting free art, movies, dance, and musical performances along the Greenway as part of the

Northern Spark all-night art festival.

June 9th is also the evening of the Greenway Glow, our biggest fundraising event of the year.  Formerly the Greenway Challenge, the Greenway Glow is a night time bike ride that will raise money for the Midtown Greenway Coalition's programs and services.  The ride (about 7 miles total, with optional loops for more distance) will feature rest stops at Northern Spark venues near the Greenway--and a big post ride party!

Participants will compete to see who can deck out their bike with the most creative lights, and prizes will also be awarded for best costume, for raising the most money to support the Coalition, and for having the largest team.

To participate in the Greenway Glow, cyclists will pay a registration fee ($25 early bird, $30 after May 25) and collect $75 or more in pledges/donations.  Our website will have a registration link up soon, so stay tuned for that!

Not sure how to light up your bike in a prize-winning fashion?  Check these posts out for inspiration. And yes, I know it's not Christmas time.

The first-ever Winter Wonder Walk/Ride  will happen on Saturday, February 11th.  From 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., the Greenway will teem with winter fun: a fat tire bike obstacle course ,  slow-bike races, tricycle trains, three-legged snowshoe races, bike tubing, and more.  We'll have snacks and hot drinks to keep you going; you can even enjoy a s'more made with a marshmallow toasted on a bike spoke.

Register now !  Participation is free and open to the public.  Plenty of activities will be centered around the Midtown area, within walking distance of each other. You can also bring  a bike to access another activity hub at Brackett Park.  Either way, check in at Freewheel Midtown Bike Center between 11:30 and 12.  The official kick-off will happen at noon outside of Freewheel.

A big thanks to these organizations for helping make this event possible!

(download)

We've had two recent robberies reported on the Midtown Greenway. A printable copy of the crime alert is attached to this email.

On Jan. 9, (2012) at about 11:20 PM, two victims walking on the Midtown Greenway, at Elliot Ave So. were robbed at gunpoint by two males. Neither victim was physically injured. Victims lost a cell phone, cash and credit cards to the suspects.

On Jan. 16, (2012) at about 10:30 PM, a lone cyclist was knocked off the bicycle by two suspects who demanded money. The robbery occurred at 12 Ave. So. and the Greenway. They took the victim’s backpack containing identification, debit and credit cards, cell phone and other items. Suspects fled when another cyclist approached and yelled at them to stop. The victim sustained injuries to the face.

Suspect Information:   We have similar suspect descriptions for both robberies. In one case they were described by the victim as Native American or Hispanic males between 20 and 25 years old. In the other the suspects were described as Native American males between 18 and 22. All suspects were about 6 feet tall. One was described as having a heavy build. All were dressed in black hoodies, caps and trousers. One of the suspects may have been limping.

What you can do:

Be aware of your surroundings.

Carry a cell phone. Make yourself familiar with the locations of the “blue light” phones on the Greenway. If you see anything suspicious, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Be alert to people loitering on the trail.

Become familiar with the locations of the exit ramps.

Ride or walk with a friend if possible, particularly at night.

If you see someone ahead of you on the trail, trust your instincts.

Be prepared to turn back and go the other way if you feel you should.

Contact the Midtown Greenway Association about their bike patrol at 612-879-0103

If you have questions, have information about the robberies or would like personal safety information, contact: CPS Don Greeley at 673-3482  or donald.greeley@minneapolismn.gov.

Xcel Ordered to Bury Lines

The Public Utilities Commission decided today that Xcel will bury the High Voltage Power lines under 28th St. Xcel still has 30 days to decide who they will charge for the $13 million additional charge for burying the cable (all Minnesota or just Minneapolis customers).

After a long deliberation, the Public Utilities Commission voted to bury the lines under 28th Street.  We're very excited about this decision, and thank the numerous community groups and individuals that donated their time, money, and energy towards achieving this result.  THANK YOU!!!
The PUC did not rule on who should pay for the extra cost to bury the lines.  However, Xcel has already said they would like to charge the entire rate base (all customers), and our understanding of the law is that the entire rate base should indeed pay for transmission lines.   There will be more news regarding the public comment process related to this issue, and we'll do our best to keep you updated.  The Coalition and will also play a role in helping to design the sub-stations.

From MPR:

Mirzayi noted the company did support the decision to place the lines underground. The Hiawatha will carry 55 megawatts of power, enough to serve 50,000 customers.
"This part of the city continues to show load growth," said Mirzayi.
Burying the lines will add $13 million to construction costs. The total project is estimated to cost $40 million.
In 30 days, Xcel must file a proposal for how the costs will be shared among rate payers. The company will continue to work with community groups on landscape and design plans for the power substations.
Mirzayi estimates construction will take 18 months, and the lines will be operational in 2014.

Xcel Wants to Bury Power Lines

According to Ward 9 Councilman Gary Schiff, Xcel Energy has reversed their long held opinion about where to put their new power lines.

From his Facebook account:

Xcel reversed their long-standing objections to burying the power lines, and reversed their long standing opinion that if the line is buried, it should be payed for only by Minneapolis rate payers. Today they essentially changed their minds and agreed with the city: that burial is the only option and that the facility should be considered a standard facility, with the cost of burial paid for by all Xcel customers across the state of Minnesota.

Here is the packet submitted to the Public Utility Commission:

Certificate of Need:

Route Permit:

You can also watch the 4 hours of video if you want! The Xcel Rep mentioned the change at about 35 minutes into the webcast.

Power lines on the Greenway?  Not if we can help it.

Public Utilities Commission Hearings regarding Xcel Energy's Hiawatha Project
January 10th and January 12th, 2012
9:30 a.m. in the Large Hearing Room on the 3rd floor of the Metro Square Building, 121 7th Place E, Suite 350 in Saint Paul

We know this is a crazy time of year, so we're sending a few extra e-news updates to make sure all of our members and friends have heard about one of the most important issues facing the Greenway.  Hearings that will decide the fate of the high-voltage power lines in the Greenway have been scheduled for January 10th and 12th, and we'd like as many of you as possible to show your support by attending.

We are strongly encouraging the PUC to uphold the Administrative Law Judge's recommendation that the power lines should be buried under 28th Street, not routed overhead and not on the Greenway.  See artist's rendering (left) for an illustration of how high-voltage lines would affect the Greenway.

These hearings will have a significant impact on the Greenway and the Greenway neighborhoods. If at all possible, please attend one or both.  SIGN UP HERE to commit to joining us at the hearings!

We know a midday, midweek hearing will be tough for many of you to attend.  If this applies, we encourage you to submit written comments to the Commission instead.  You can email them to burl.haar@state.mn.us or mail them to 121 7th Place E, Suite 350, Saint Paul, MN 55101.  Comments can be addressed to Burl Haar, Executive Secretary, Minnesota Public Utilities Commission. Be sure to refer to Hiawatha Transmission Project, Docket 09-38 so that your comments will be filed correctly.

For more information and background on the Hiawatha Project, visit the Midtown Greenway Coalition, Xcel Energy, or the Public Utilities Commission pages.
